The characters are so believable, I was sure I'd met one or two of them in the country town where I grew up.
Harper weaves past and present together so skillfully that there is no sense of awkwardness as it moves from one time to the other, no sense of holding up or slowing down the storyline. Because this is not only a story about the shooting of a young family, but the death of a town, the mysterious drowning of a young woman 20 years ago, and the death of the river that took her life. Harper's descriptions of the Australian countryside in drought is almost unnerving, You can feel the heat drawing the life out of the town and its people, exposing the bones of the past and a tragedy on multiple levels.
I am an avid reader of mystery and thrillers from around the world and this my pick of the genre by an Australian writer.
